Lilo & Stitch 2-Disc Big Wave Edition DVD Review

Mad Scientist Jumba creates a ferocious alien called Experiment 626, who is programmed to destroy everything in it’s path. After the Intergalactic Council manages to capture 626, he is sentenced to banishment on an abandoned asteroid. Jumba’s deceivingly innocent looking little experiment quickly manages to break free and steal a spaceship which he promptly crashes on Earth. Hiding out until everyone stops looking for him, Experiment 626 finds himself capture by the dog catcher and taken to animal control. Young innocent Lilo enters his life and adapts the alien desguised as a dog. Lilo renames the creature Stitch and teaches him about all things Elvis and the importance of family. Lilo is not without pursuers however and soon the showdown commences.

Stitch Does Elvis

Lilo and Stitch has always been a favorite in our house, thanks to the mischivous little Stitch, who is nearly as destructive as my 5 and 3 year olds playing together. The storyline is fun for both boys and girls and pretty original. This movie did inadvertantly manage to take any spookiness from the movie The Ring once I realized that the creepy dead girl, Samara was really Daveigh Chase, the voice of Lilo….but I digress. There is not a whole lot to say that has not been said about this film before. It is the same fun movie with an identical transfer to the 2003 release but with a second disc of extra bonus features.

That is my cue to go ahead and talk all of the new stuff…This re-release is not lacking in the feature department. The Big Wave Edition includes over 2 hours of materials ranging from games and music videos to deleted scenes and commentary tracks. First up is the aforementioned commentary track. It features co-directors Dean Deblois and Chris Sanders discussing techinical aspects of the creation of Lilo and Stitch. This is a great track for animation enthusiasts as it is more of a technical nature and not much fluff material and anectdotes. A Stitch in Time is a quirky little feature, placing everyone’s favorite alien into scenes from other Disney animated classics. “Your Ohana” is a short music video that consists of scenes from the film set to the music of a children’s chorus. On the second disc is the nearly 2 hour long documentary The Story Room:The Making of Lilo and Stitch. This extremely comprehensive feature goes behind the scenes across the entire process of creating Lilo and Stitch including the initial movie pitch to get the ball rolling. Although quite long, it is a fascinating watch and definately worth checking out. Hosted by Lilo (Daveigh Chase) and Nani (Tia Carrere,) Disneypedia:Hawaii is a quick way to find out everything you could possibly want to know about Hawaii (unless it’s about Dog the Bounty Hunter, he didn’t get a mention!) The Build An Alien game features Lilo and Stitch trivia as young scientists answer questions and mix chemicals on the screen to build a new experiment. Also included are various music videos and deleted, extended scenes to round things out.

Not a lot has changed for this re-release of Lilo and Stitch. If you already picked up your copy of the exploits of the mischivous little alien, Stitch, I would not recommend repurchasing for a few extra bonus features. If you do not own it, however it is definately worth picking up. The thing that I found a bit odd though, was that there was no Blu Ray release of Lilo & Stitch to accompany the standard format. To me that would be the definitive version to own when it eventually is offered.
