The much-anticipated next chapter of the Terminator series does not disappoint. In this episode we are introduced to Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) a cop killer with a conscious who signs away his soon to be remains while on death row to a company who eventually becomes the sinister master behind the machines, Skynet.

Jumping a few decades, we are whisked to the post-apocalyptic “Judgment Day” referred to in the previous films. Christian Bale plays the now adult John Connor, already a legend in his time, and the unofficial leader of “The Resistance,” humans fighting for their survival against the constant onslaught of terminator hunting robots.

John Connor has still to meet his soon to be father, Kyle Reese, the man he would soon send into the past to save him in the first Terminator movie, and who also ends up being John’s father. In this time, Kyle is but a lonely teenager played by Anton Yelchin, who ends up being the first person to meet up with the revived Marcus Wright, who doesn’t understand how he is alive or where and what time he’s in.

It’s not long before we find out that Marcus is both man and machine, created by Skynet for a purpose not yet known. It is the struggle between his two halves that make the dramatic points of the movie.

The movie is full of action and at times suspenseful. The man vs. machine battles are well directed without the headache inducing CGI sequences in movies like Transformers. It’s surprisingly “retro” in special effects, which is refreshing.

Bale, fresh off his Batman sequel, does well as the leader Connor, but honestly the role could have been given to anyone. One focuses less on the star power and more on the movie as a whole, and the cast does well together. Standouts include Jadagrace Berry, who plays a mute nine year old who seems to know just what to do at just the right time.

Overall,Terminator is a pleasant diversion and a fun movie to watch, especially if you are a fan of the previous movies. Even Arnold makes an appearance. The violence is mostly man vs. machine, but there is a lot of it. A great movie for taking the kids one afternoon, either with the wife, or to give her some quiet time at the house.

If it doesn’t fit these simple criteria, the movie gets the WASTED rating, which means – don’t waste the precious time you have, wait for video/cable when you can squeeze it between chores, work and sleep.
